When the country is facing a change in weather, it rains. Rains that occurs only 4-5 times a month. In mountainous regions in Saudi like Jeddah or Mecca, they experience more rains. The reason to this is that the area has high altitudes of absorbing moisture from clouds that is moved from the Red Sea.

It also often rains in the mountainous and agricultural region in Taif.

Rainfalls in Saudi are sometimes followed by sandstorm or vice versa. With great sandstorm comes a rainfall.

We usually put the channel on TV to the Makkah channel (channel #1 here in Saudi) whenever it’s prayer time, and to our surprise during rainfall, this is what we saw on TV,

rainfall in saudi

The only danger it poses to residents are when they are off the road. Sudden sand slides and flash floods when there is extreme rain. It rains just suddenly and sometimes there are no indicators unlike in most countries in Asia. Wherein weather forecasters can predict three days before in comes inside the country.

So when you are in Saudi, and have a personal mode of transportation (which most western expatriates do) be wary of the months you may experience rain. Stay off the road. Any how it would not cost you that much time to wait for it to stop and drive the road again.
